"Trust and Obey" . . .

"Trust and Obey" . . .

In 1886 the famous American preacher, Dwight L. Moody, was holding a series of meetings in Brockton, Massachusetts.  One night Daniel B. Towner, Moody's musician at the time, noted the words spoken in testimony by a young man at the meeting:  "I am not quite sure . . . but I am going to trust and I am going to obey."

Towner sent the quote with a little story to J. H. Sammis, a Presbyterian minister, and the hymn "Trust and Obey" was born.

When we align our living with God's guidance, we cannot fail.  Sometimes we have clear choices and know the right thing to do.  But at other times, we may not know or understand what God wants in a specific situation.  Through prayer and by the word of God, we must count on God to lead us.  He has promised us that He will show us the way.

"Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight." Proverbs3:5-6

Guidance is given by God . . . but obedience is required.  We must prove God's ways in all of our living by obeying Him.  This obedience should not come from us just because it is demanded.  It should come from a heart of gratitude for who God is and what He has done for us.  Jesus said: "If you love me, you will obey what I command." John 14:15 (NIV)

"Trust and obey, for there's no other way

to be happy in Jesus, but to trust and obey."

--From "Trust and Obey" by J. H. Sammis
