"Something To Brag About" . . .

"Something To Brag About" . . .

"Since ancient times no one has heard,

no ear has perceived,

no eye has seen any God besides you,

who acts on behalf of those who wait for Him."

Isaiah 64:4 (NIV)

The Apostle Paul says, "In all things, rejoice," and follows that up with, "Again I say, rejoice." So you figure it can't be a "typo."

And he tells us, "Give thanks in all things . . .."

How was he able to follow his on advice, traveling from town-to-town, getting beaten and shipwrecked, knowing thirst and hunger, and often getting into serious and finally fatal trouble with the Guys In Charge?

One of the reasons is that Paul had read Isaiah. He knew God had been in Isaiah's corner and was always, and eternally, in his.

Paul didn't know George Jones and Tammy Wynette, a duo you seldom hear mentioned in the same sentence as either Paul or the New Testament. But, in the late 1960s they released a song by Bobby Braddock called "Something To Brag About," a hit about the main thing a couple did have, regardless of what they didn't have . . ..

". . . I wear a twenty dollar suit

I bought from J.C. Penney's

Back in 1962.

But I've got somethin' to brag about

Somethin' to brag about

Somethin' to brag about in you."

Paul knew he was looking down here through the same dark glass as the rest of the believers were. But he'd read Isaiah, and he'd seen Jesus, and so he was able to share with the church in Corinth and with us today and with believers through the ages the hope that is a reality in Christ, who died on the cross we boast in. You've got something to brag about: you are "the joy set before" Christ, the author of grace and love, who has your situation well in hand.

"However, as it is written:

'What no eye has seen, what no ear has heard,

and what no human mind has conceived --

the things God has prepared for those who love Him.'

These are the things God has revealed to us by His Spirit.

The Spirit searches all things, even the deep things of God."

1 Corinthians 2:9-10 (NIV)
