Remember Whose You Are . . .

Remember Whose You Are . . .

"Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God." John 1:12 (NIV)

When I was in college (back in the Stone Ages before cell phones), my dad would write notes to me. He would sometimes write at the very end of the note, "Remember Whose You Are."

He didn't say remember your family name and reputation. He didn't say remember how to act. He told me to remember who I belonged to. As Robert Frost said, "And that has made all the difference."

From the cradle to the grave, we want to belong. This God-given desire is the reason young people join gangs or cliques. It's sometimes why people start a life of crime or choose racism or even, if it is pursued in the wrong way, go to church.

But to belong to God's family, to be His own special treasure . . . that is the ultimate fulfillment of the desire to belong. That's because we aren't just given entrance into a club with a ticket. Our entrance was paid for by blood. And not just anyone's blood.

Our entrance into God's family was paid for by none other than God's own Son, Jesus. Could we feel any more loved and wanted than this?

"See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are!" 1 John 3:1 (NIV)

There is such security in knowing that I belong to God and His family. To be loved and valued, and to belong, are indescribable treasures. That is what God says about us!

"But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God's special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light." 1 Peter 2:9 (NIV)

Whether someone is a college student away from home for the first time, a busy mom or dad trying to take care of everyone or an elderly person facing the end of life, we can belong to a good Father who we know will take care of us.

"If we live, we live for the Lord, or if we die, we die for the Lord; therefore whether we live or die, we are the Lord's." Romans 14:8 (NIV)
