Our Prince of Peace . . .

Our Prince of Peace . . .

"You know the message God sent to the people of Israel, announcing the good news of peace through Jesus Christ, who is Lord of all." Acts 10:36 (NIV)

As we turned the monthly calendar page, we could see the year advance as well. Another segment of our lives became history. A glance back at what we left calls to mind special events that made the year notable in one way or another. There were some points of joy and some of grief; some victories and some defeats; some successes and some failures. No month or week or day was the same. That thought in itself is rather remarkable.

With all the "ups-and-downs" we experience, our unwanted stresses seem to linger. If not about the circumstances we are in . . . then, these stresses are about what the future may hold for us. Our battles even may be outside our scope of perception coming from "powers of this dark world and the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms" at which point, we must rely on the full armor of God (see Ephesians 6:12).

I am reminded that Jesus' disciples were not without their own anxieties. In a storm on the water, Jesus quieted the waves with a simple, "Be still" (see Mark 4:39). In the garden as the soldiers came for his arrest and Peter drew his sword, Jesus said, "Put your sword away" (see John 18:11). The enemies of Jesus became enraged when He spoke, but His followers were encouraged and reassured by His calm demeanor.

We must try to avoid anxiety by remembering our blessings in prayer and with thanksgiving.  "And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus." Philippians 4:7 (NIV)

"Teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom." Psalm 90:12 (NIV)
