Lasting Investments . . .

Lasting Investments . . .

        . . . 1 Timothy 6:6-19

Readers, I warn you . . . tomorrow's lesson is a powerful one that among other things, provides important instructions and guidelines to avoid the "money-traps" that we are all tempted to enter!

"For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs." 1 Timothy 6:10

Lifeway's Commentary book for this lesson begins with the story of a missionary struggling with the temptations of materialism.  He thought that when he answered God's call to missions, he was prepared to give up everything and be satisfied with 1 donkey and a grass hut.  However, when he arrived on the mission field, he noticed that others had a two-story grass huts and 2 donkeys, which created a "yearning" for a larger house and back-up transportation.

In verses 6-8, Paul coaches Timothy on two reasons for pursuing Godliness and then what is truly required for our contentment.  He provides some guidelines about not falling into the trap of an endless cycle of desire for more material possessions.

Paul also provides guidelines for the rich, who in spite of their wealth can live a Godly life, by adhering to Paul's instructions.  Folks, this doesn't apply only to the "super rich," it applies to those who are blessed with more than enough to satisfy our basic needs for food, clothing, and shelter.  It is so easy to be trapped by the never ending pursuit to acquire more material goods for whatever reason . . . including "keeping up with the Jones."

Please study this lesson at home . . . and come prepared to share your thoughts in your Sunday School class, tomorrow.
