Just Look Around . . .

Just Look Around . . .

"But if we hope for what we do not yet have,

we wait for it patiently." Romans 8:25 (NIV)

As we reflect on our past, we no doubt remember better times and more enjoyable times than current circumstances provide. We can also identify some bad times and even our worst days. In recalling the latter, we must acknowledge that we are better off now than then . . . so circumstances can improve.

With recent surgery rehabilitation in progress, I cannot truly believe I will get physically stronger than I was before, but my life may well be extended through the process. A positive attitude will provide inner strength, serving to keep spirits up, goals set, and directions on course.

I recall an "activities leader" in a nursing home where our mother was a resident for a time. She was positive, cheery, encouraging, and always helpful. As a devoted St. Louis Cardinals baseball fan, she could always share conversations about games and players with other residents of like interest. Her life had not been always easy, sometimes serving to learn life lessons, sometimes regrets. She shared with me one day that, "One good thing about working here is that when I start to feel sorry for myself, all I have to do is look around." How true. Every resident she worked with was worse off than she was.

Outcomes will be what they will be, but we can still enjoy the journey. When I feel discouraged, all I have to do is look around, locally or globally, and realize how much I really have in family, friendships, food, shelter, and transportation. Then I can close my eyes . . . and see Jesus . . . and His Cross . . . and think, "what in the world do I possibly have to complain about??"

"Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction,

faithful in prayer." Romans 12:12 (NIV)
