It's the Right Time! . . .

It's the Right Time! . . .

"For He says, 'In an acceptable time, I have heard you.  And in time I have helped you. Behold, now is the accepted time, behold now is the time of salvation.'"  2 Corinthians 2:6 (NKJV)

The Week of Prayer  for the Georgia Barnette State Mission Offering for Baptist churches is September 13 through September 20.  This offering is named after Georgia Barnette who was the first, full-time, paid Executive Director of the Louisiana Baptists' Woman's Missionary Union (WMU).

Georgia Barnette traveled to New Orleans in 1901 and was employed by the Home Mission Board as a city missionary through the First Baptist Church of New Orleans.  God opened her eyes to the vast need for missionary work in this beloved city and state.   Upon her election to state WMU leadership, she wrote thousands of letters by hand to encourage the planting of new churches, reaching the lost, and training WMU workers to help in all kinds of needy situations.  It was the right time!

Barnette encouraged Louisianans to become Great Commission Christians.  Offerings are taken each fall for the Georgia Barnette State Missions offering to continue this great work.  This year's goal is $1.7 million.  Over 500 church planters and pastors have attended the Greenhouse training since 1915.  Over 15,000 people have been won to Christ since 2010.  Hispanic churches have doubled over this period. Compassion ministries include food pantries, English as a second language, addiction recovery, adult reading and writing, and job training, among others.  Scholarships are also available through the Hannah Reynolds WMU Scholarship program.

Georgia Barnette offerings also help train workers when disasters occur.  With Hurricane Laura behind us and COPD-19 still with us, funds are needed to continue this great work.   We must stay prepared.  Do you remember the damaging winds, fallen trees, homes needing repairs, spoiled food in freezers, sick folks dying, families sleeping in cars, masks being worn, and social distancing?  Over 50,000 meals have been served.  Scholarship assistance is offered to college and seminary students.

The time is right! "Laura" will not be the last hurricane.  More pandemic viruses will come.  We must be prepared.  Dr. Steve Horn, Executive Director for Louisiana Baptist, noted recently in "The Baptist Message" that Louisiana Baptist were prepared for "Laura"  before landfall occurred in South Louisiana.  He continues to urge Louisiana Baptist to give generously and sacrificially and prayerfully to Georgia Barnette's home missions.  The time is right!

The Apostle Paul said:  "Behold, now is the accepted time.  Behold now is the time of salvation."  The time is right!
