"Here Comes That Loud Guy In That Loud Coat . . ."

"Here Comes That Loud Guy In That Loud Coat . . ."

"Joseph had a dream, and when he told it to his brothers, they hated him all the more.  He said to them, 'Listen to this dream I had:  We were binding sheaves of grain out in the field when suddenly my sheaf rose and stood upright, while your sheaves gathered around mine and bowed down to it.'"

"His brothers said to him, 'Do you intend to reign over us? Will you actually rule us?'  And they hated him all the more because of his dream and what he had said."

"Then he had another dream, and he told it to his brothers . . .." Genesis 37: 5-9a (NIV)

The story of Joseph as a 10th grader and his pack of ill-tempered, beaten-down older brothers contains so many cautionary tales, it's hard to know where to begin.

  1. If your dad orders you a nice new jacket from Amazon and blares to the world that you are his favorite, that doesn't necessarily mean everyone wants to hear what you have to say, and especially if it's about your dreams. Especially if you're talking to brothers who are tending sheep on the back 40, away from cell service, when they'd rather be at the ballgame. This sort of behavior might be nothing more than adolescent immaturity, but it's still liable to put you in a hole, literally.
  2. If somebody opens their trap and rubs in what's painfully obvious, whether they mean to or not, that does not give you the right to kill them or sell them. Envy and malice never feels as good in the long run as we'd hoped it would. Remember, God loves that guy just as much as He loves you. He doesn't play favorites and He doesn't care if you have a tailored jacket or not.

As tempers flared, things began moving rather rapidly that day on the ranch. By verse 24, Joseph is in a pit and by verse 28, he's been sold to the Midianites, who didn't even have cable. A long road awaited young Joseph. A more miserable one awaited his brothers. I'm looking forward to following them through February.
