"God is a Father". . .

"God is a Father". . .

"As a father has compassion on his children, so the Lord has compassion on those who fear him." Psalm 103:13 (NIV)

The day I got married, May 19, 1990, was one of the most wonderful days of my life. I didn't know it would be a day mixed with joy and sadness for my dad until after the wedding when I joyfully told him, "I'm married now, Dad!"

He had to turn his face away and cover his eyes because he started to cry. Later, when I saw the wedding video, I realized he had cried in the service, too.

Dad loved my new husband, Gregg, and he still does. But the special relationship that we had shared where he was the man of my dreams was changing. I was still the apple of his eye, but he was no longer the apple of my eye.

When God describes Himself in Scripture to us as a Father, it isn't an accident. He didn't randomly pick that type of role to identify Himself. Those of us who were fortunate enough to have wonderful fathers know that being the object of their delight makes us feel special, secure, confident, and cared for.

My father was always careful to discipline us because He loved us. But there was genuinely nothing he wouldn't do for us if we needed him. To this day, I know my troubles are his troubles and my joys are his joys.

What a wonderful way to think about God! When we are tempted to doubt whether He loves us, remember He reveals Himself as Father!

If you don't know Him as Father, you can today. God revealed Himself further in His Son, Jesus Christ. By trusting in Jesus' sacrifice we too can become His children forever.

"Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God-children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband's will, but born of God." John 1:12-13 (NIV)
