Believing is Seeing . . .

Believing is Seeing . . .

"Then he said to Thomas, 'Put your finger here; see my hands. Reach out your hand and put it into my side. Stop doubting and believe. 'Thomas said to him, 'My Lord and my God!'"

"Then Jesus told him, 'Because you have seen me, you have believed; blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.'" John 20: 27-29 (NIV)

Jesus did not seem to mind Thomas doubting. With compassion, the Risen Savior understood. When in history had a man been so slaughtered and then, three days later, appeared, alive again, with His friends?

Most of us fall in line with Thomas.

I wonder if Thomas's mind was altered here, if the heart of minds of all the disciples were altered. It had to be. This was not the same Jesus they had thought Him to be. He was more . . . of everything. More compassionate, more powerful. More alive, maybe? Now they were seeing not just Jesus, but they were seeing the Jesus who had done "this" for them . . . become crucified, in their place.

This was Jesus (to paraphrase Oswald Chambers) not as you believe Him to be, but in terms of what He has done for you. There might be fault in our thinking concerning the first half of that; but there is no doubt about what He has done.

Some interesting thoughts from 18th century poet, William Cowper, snuck-up on me recently:

"His purposes will ripen fast

Unfolding every hour;

The bud may have a bitter taste,

But sweet will be the flower."

"Blind unbelief is sure to err,

And scan His work in vain;

God is His own interpreter,

And He will make it plain."

Even in trying times, the more we believe . . . by recalling what Jesus has done for us . . . the more we see, and the more He reveals to us. Maybe we see more of what God is up to if, expectantly, we are believing. Maybe trusting makes our eyes stronger.

"Let us fix our eyes on Jesus." Hebrews 12:2 (NIV)
