After the Harvest . . .

After the Harvest . . .

"When the frost is on the punkin and the fodder's in the shock, And you hear the kyouck and gobble of the struttin' turkey-cock . . .." (James WHITCOMB RILEY)

If you have not read  the poem introduced above, you might enjoy reading it annually in October every year (just word search the first line).  The poetry of James Whitcomb Riley, in the Midwestern vernacular of the time, here describes the fall season beyond the leaf colors that we so enjoy, when the growing season ends, harvests are complete, the atmosphere changes, and we can grab some relaxation before the cold winter arrives.

I am reminded of God's day of rest after completing the Creation, before His real oversight began.  In this seasonal change, we can take a few days of reflection and delight in the blessings we have been afforded.

Unlike our annual harvest of food and fiber for another year of sustenance, there is coming one great and final harvest; that of souls rescued and rewarded in the blessed arms of the Lord.  What an experience that will be!

However, we cannot sit and wait on that Day.  Our physical harvests are the result of God's divine system of germination, growth, and maturity of our plants and animals.  To capitalize on this, farmers and gardeners spend their labor tending to daily needs and protection of the crop.  The spiritual harvest of souls prospers from opportunities God places before us, and our attention to teaching, preaching, and serving others, guiding them to the Savior for their eternal and glorious salvation.

"Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.  Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all people, especially to those who belong to the family of believers."  Galatians 6:9-10 (NIV)
